Lawn Bowls
It is a low-impact sport, making it perfect for all ages—from children to retirees—offering a great mix of light exercise and mental focus.
The Basics of the Game
The Jack: The game begins by rolling a small, usually white or yellow ball (the Jack) to the other end of the green. This becomes the target for the entire round.
The “Bias”: This is what makes the game unique! Lawn bowls are not perfectly round. They are weighted on one side, which is called the Bias.
The Curve: Because of the bias, a bowl will never travel in a straight line. It will travel in a beautiful, predictable curve. Part of the skill is learning exactly how much “arc” to give your shot.
The Delivery: Players take turns rolling their bowls from a starting mat. You don’t “toss” the bowl; you deliver it smoothly along the grass from a lunged position.
The Scoring: Once everyone has rolled their bowls, the person or team with the bowls closest to the Jack wins the points for that “end” (round).
